Be a Healthy College Student

When you first go away to college, you find yourself  in an unfamiliar environment.
You have a new room mate you don’t know, and have to sleep in a bed that is not
your own. While away from home you can’t forget about learning how to eat healthy
foods while at college. Healthy eating is important so that you keep the weight
off and keep your immune system healthy.

It is first important to settle into an eating routine. At home, you would
probably never eat after a certain time at night—try not to at college either.
If you’re used to eating breakfast, wake up before classes in enough time to
do so. At the very least, be sure that you have time between classes for a
balanced lunch and dinner.

Do not skip meals.

If you have a hectic schedule, as most people do, you’ll need to schedule
time to eat. Instead of grabbing food from a vending machine when you are
hungry, plan ahead. Take a healthy salad or sandwich with you to eat if you
have class over mealtime. Most professors don’t mind if you bring food to
class as long as your eat it quietly.

When you do have time to eat in the cafeteria, it is important to make healthy
decisions. Most colleges offer pizza and a variety of desserts every day, but
that doesn’t mean you have to eat them! Look for choices that have a balance of
the food groups in every meal. A good indication that you have a nutritious meal
is color. If your plate is colorful, with fruits, vegetables, and proteins, you
are on the right track.

Of course, not every college has a cafeteria, and even if yours does you might
choose to eat elsewhere. Try not to be tempted to order take away foods too often,
when participating in study groups. Try to find the best options here and allow
yourself to splurge only on special occasions. For example, if someone is ordering
pizza, see if the pizzeria also offers salads. This may be a healthy option. Try
to stay away from fried or greasy foods.

College is one of the best times of your life. Don’t let poor eating choices ruin
the experience. You might also want to note as a closing thought that alcohol has
more empty calories than most of the foods you can eat at the cafeteria combined.
Staying away from it can not only keep you safe, but also healthy.

    Okay, now remember, this is for people Over 40 ONLY.

    If you’re younger than 40, and you get offended by anything I

    Now then…

    I want to tell you what happened to me the other day…

    I bought an exercise dvd because I’m tired of being tired. I
    would like to get into shape, I want to fit into my clothes, and
    I want energy - LOTS of it!

    So I put on my old sweats, put on the dvd, and here was this
    barely 20 - 25 something girl in great shape, grinning
    menacingly (I swear!) at the camera like she was going to
    take a bite out it. Or me.

    “Don’t worry,” she says. “We’re going to start out real slow.”

    Grin grin grin.

    Barely five minutes into her jumping/gyrating/vibrating routine,
    I collapsed on the couch, completely confused, frustrated and
    ANNOYED.

    Maybe, just maybe I could have kept up with her for awhile if
    something she did made SENSE.

    But just when I was able to copy one of her moves, she was on to
    the next one like a frenzied rabid rabbit.

    “Okay,” she grins, “Put your right arm up and step with your left
    foot and put your left arm out and hop with your right leg while
    bending at the waist and touch your forehead to the floor and
    snap back up and whirl your arms while moving your legs out and
    in and then turn left and slide down and roll and back up and
    bend and touch your head to your butt and…”

    Holy Smoke!!!

    Who exercises like this???

    Not me.

    I’m over 40.

    I want to get in shape.

    I want to feel good, look good, and have lots of energy.
